Final Day at the Orphanage

Yesterday was our last full day in Jinja and by far the hottest; there has been a marked increase in temperature over the last week as Uganda nears the beginning of the rainy season.   Determined not to be slowed we continued with much deliberations over the Maize Mill and called on the showroom of China North Machines.

Not too sure what they were chatting about as the owner did not speak a word of English!

We have decided to proceed with a electricity powered huller and mill.   Email responses from some aid organisation confirmed John’s fear that the diesel powered motors whilst cheaper were inefficient and not worth the trouble!   Big John has prepared the budget below in anticipation of receiving additional funds; he has been particularly efficient, as he wants to run the chicken coop, dormitory and maize mill buildings concurrently.   We are happy that he is being so careful with the funds and making it possible for us to benefit from economies of scale.  However, we may hesitate in purchasing the actual maize mill machinery until the chicken coop is in full operation and the last payments have been made in relation to the dormitory.

We are really pleased with the development of these self-sustaining projects.  By equipping Big John with the tools to sustain the school we feel highly confident that the orphan home project will be a lasting success.
